Water Line Installation in Rutherfordton, NC

Water line installation is trench work we do across Rutherfordton and surrounding areas, for new houses and older homes with failing lines. We handle the digging from the meter to the house, then leave the yard ready to grow back over it.

Trenching a 1,700 Foot Water Line Along a Rural Road

Trench dug along a rural road for a 1,700 foot water line

On August 6, 2026, our crews posted that they had put in a 1,700 foot water line that day. A line that long passes more than one property, so the trench has to stay neat and the road open. In the words of the post, H&L “tapped into water company & ran to residents to give them a water supply.”

The first photo shows the trench along the grass shoulder of a gravel road. It is a narrow slot in red clay, with the dirt piled on the field side. The photo further down shows the pipe lying along the bottom of the trench, ready to be covered.

How We Run a Water Line From the Meter to the House

A short line to one house and a long line to several follow the same order of work.

  1. We walk the route with you and check the slope, trees, rock and any drive or ditch the line must cross.
  2. Before any digging, we put in the NC811 locate request and wait for the buried utilities to be marked.
  3. We cut the trench along the route and keep the spoil on one side, so it goes back where it came from.
  4. The pipe is laid along the trench bottom without kinks, and the meter end is connected the way your provider asks.
  5. We backfill, pack the dirt down so the strip does not sink later, and grade it level with the yard around it.

When Does a Water Line Need Replacing?

Water line replacement is worth a look when you see one of these signs.

  • A wet or extra green patch stays between the meter and the house after a dry week.
  • Water pressure at the taps has dropped over time for no clear reason.
  • The meter keeps turning while every faucet in the house is shut off.
  • The old line has been patched more than once and now leaks somewhere new.
  • An addition, garage or new driveway is planned right over where the old line runs.

A replacement follows the same steps as a new line. We plan the switchover with you, so the house is without water for as short a time as we can manage. If the leak looks like it is at the meter itself, call your water provider first.

Rutherford County Water Providers and NC811

Who supplies your water depends on where you live. Broad River Water Authority provides water service to the Town of Rutherfordton. The Town of Forest City runs its own treatment plant, which draws from the Second Broad River.

Before a new line goes in, ask your provider who sets the meter and who makes the tap on the main. Ask too where their side ends and yours begins, because that tells us where our part of the job starts.

NC811 asks anyone digging to contact 811 or 1-800-632-4949 three working days ahead. The utilities then mark their publicly managed lines for free. Private lines, such as a pipe to a barn or a cable to a shed, are not marked that way. So show us any you know about before the trench is cut.

Running a Water Line to a New House

On raw land, the water line is one part of getting a lot ready to build. When we are also preparing the house site, the trench can go in on the same visit. It can then run beside the new driveway rather than under it. Bigger earthwork, such as cutting back a slope or fixing drainage, falls under our grading and excavation work.

“Moving earth takes time precision and the right pieces to be in place. This company has all that and more.”

Questions We Hear a Lot

  • Ask your water provider where the meter will be and who sets it. Then show us any private lines, septic parts or buried cables, because NC811 marks only the utilities' own pipes and wires.

  • That depends on your provider, so ask before the job is scheduled. On the road job in the photos, H&L made the tap and ran the line on to the homes.

  • Rock and big roots slow a trench down, and so does every crossing under a drive or a road. A short run from a meter to one house is a much smaller job than a long line beside a road. We can give you a rough timeline once we have walked yours.

  • For a while, yes, because the dirt sits beside the trench until the pipe is laid. Once it is covered, the strip is leveled with the yard. Bare dirt can then be seeded so grass comes back.

  • Price depends on the length, the digging, any crossings, and your provider's charges for the tap and meter. Call (828) 289-8180, tell us where the meter and the house are, and we will come and look.
