H&L Landscaping and Grading is a grading contractor and excavating contractor based on US-64/74A, about 6.5 miles from downtown Rutherfordton. Recent Grading Work in Rutherford County

In July 2026 our grading crew finished a new road. The photo shows it fresh: a strip of red clay graded smooth through the trees. A road like that is grading from end to end, because every stretch has to shed water to the side instead of down the middle. In Rutherfordton we did the site work for Foothills Mini Golf. At the ground breaking on September 21, 2026, they thanked “Bryson and team H&L” and the town for their support.

Hurricane Helene hit this county hard in late September 2024. Even east of the Rutherford mountains, the National Weather Service recorded flooding, downed trees and power lines, and wind damage. From the first day to the last, our crews worked to “rebuild our county job by job,” as we put it looking back.

Yard Drainage and Storm Drains

Water does most of the damage on a lot that was graded badly, or never graded at all. Call us if you see any of these.

One customer had a lot beside their home grown up in 8-foot weeds. We removed the debris, took down trees leaning toward the house and installed a water drainage system. Then we graded the ground and hydroseeded it so they could have grass. They have already put us on the schedule for their main property.

For a storm drain, we find where the water comes from and where it can safely go. Then we lay the pipe with enough fall to carry it there. NC811 asks for a call three working days before any digging, and the utilities mark their public underground lines at no charge.

Rough Grading or Finish Grading: Which Do You Need?

Rough grading sets the shape of the land. We cut the high ground, fill the low spots, and set the slopes, the pad height and the path water will take. It is the heavy part of the job, where most of the soil moves.

Finish grading comes last and smooths the top few inches so the surface is ready for seed, gravel or the next trade. A new home needs both, which is what our house site prep covers, while a lumpy lawn may only need the top smoothed and seeded.

Banks, Walls and Commercial Site Work

In September 2026 we worked below a metal-roof building that sits close to the road. The job was land clearing and a block retaining wall, then grading the slope around it, with hydroseeding to follow. The photo shows the wall in place and the graded bank below it.

Another company once left one of our customers with a big mess after putting in a concrete pad for a metal building. Bryson and the crew came out right away and fixed the problems it left. We do commercial and residential work. On a business lot, the grade has to suit the owner's plans, the parking area and where the water goes.
