Retaining Walls in Rutherfordton, NC

A retaining wall holds a hillside back so the flat ground below it can carry a drive, a yard or the side of a house. H&L is a retaining wall contractor and a grading company in one. The crew that cuts the bank also sets the block, lays the drainage and grades around it. One recent wall went in during September 2026, along a cut slope beside a log cabin.

Signs Your Slope Needs a Retaining Wall

  • Red clay washes off a cut bank onto your drive or patio every time it rains hard.
  • The hillside is too steep to mow, plant or walk across safely.
  • You need a level strip for a driveway, parking or a building, and the slope is in the way.
  • The bank above your house creeps closer each year as rain eats away at the bottom of it.

A Block Retaining Wall Beside a Log Cabin

Retaining wall blocks being set along a cut hillside beside a cabin

This job sat at the foot of a steep hillside, with a log cabin on one side and a bare cut bank on the other. There was no way in for our machines, so the crew built a road first. In the words of our own post, we “had to install a road to gain access then put the land back to original.”

The photo was taken while the blocks were being set. Large blocks run along the cut, black drain pipe lies behind them, and the red clay in front is graded flat. Once finished, the wall kept the bank off the cabin and gave it a usable strip of ground.

How We Build a Retaining Wall, Step by Step

  1. Bryson walks the slope with you, looks at where the water comes from and marks where the wall should run.
  2. We contact NC811 three working days before we dig, so buried utility lines get marked, and we check what permits the job needs.
  3. The crew cuts the bank back and digs a level, firm base for the first course, which sets the line for every block above it.
  4. Drain pipe goes in behind the bottom course, so water has a way out instead of pushing against the block.
  5. The upper courses go on with backfill placed and packed behind each one as the wall rises.
  6. Finally we grade the ground in front and finish it with gravel or seed.

Why Does a Retaining Wall Need Drainage Behind It?

Trapped water is what usually pushes a wall over. After a soaking rain the ground behind a wall gets heavy, and on a cut hillside more water keeps coming down from above. Without a path out, that weight presses on the back of the block until the wall leans or the joints start to weep.

That is why drainage behind the wall goes in early, and our cabin photo shows the pipe laid behind the block before any backfill was placed. The pipe collects the water behind the wall and carries it to an outlet past the end, where it can run off without cutting a ditch through your yard.

Slopes and Heavy Rain in Rutherford County

Much of the land here is hill country, and every house or drive cut into a slope leaves a raw bank behind it. Hurricane Helene showed what water does to that kind of ground. In September 2024 the National Weather Service listed washed-out roads among the damage in Rutherford County. A wall with working drainage keeps a cut bank where it belongs when the next big storm comes through.

Finishing the Ground Around the Wall

Finished block retaining wall and graded gravel drive beside a log cabin

A wall is only done when the ground around it is. At the cabin, the strip between the wall and the house became a graded gravel drive. The access road we had built to get in came out again, and our driveways and private roads page covers that side of the work.

Another wall that month sat below a metal-roof building by the road. There the order was clearing, the wall and grading, with seed planned to finish it. Bare soil next to a new wall should not stay bare for long, so we cover it with hydroseeding or gravel. If the wall is one part of a bigger dig, our grading and excavation crew handles the rest of the site.

“Bryson and his crew were great. They did everything I asked for and more Bryson answers the phone every time I call him and if he couldn’t, he called me right back which I appreciate. Everything looks great thanks!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions We Hear a Lot

  • It depends on the wall and on where your property sits. Rutherfordton and Forest City handle permits and inspections inside their town limits, so the right office depends on your address. We check what your job needs before any digging starts.

  • The price depends on the wall's length and height, the block, how much bank has to be cut back and how hard the site is to reach. Drain pipe and finish grading add to it as well. Call (828) 289-8180 and Bryson can come and look at the slope.

  • A short wall on open ground goes up faster than a long one at the foot of a steep hill. Access, the weather and how much grading the site needs set the pace more than the block does. Once we have walked the slope, we can tell you how long yours should take.

  • Usually we can find a route. On the cabin job we had to build a road to the wall first, then return the ground to how we found it. Tell us about gates, soft ground or low wires on the way in, so we can plan around them.

  • We grade it so water runs away from the wall and from the house. Then it gets gravel, as at the cabin, or hydroseed so grass can hold the soil. Ground left bare tends to wash out in the next hard rain.
