Demolition in Rutherfordton, NC
H&L is a demolition contractor in Rutherfordton, NC, taking down old houses, mobile homes, sheds and barns that have outlived their use. Because we are a grading company, the job does not end at a pile of debris. We also offer dump truck services, so hauling is part of the same job instead of a second contractor.
Buildings and Structures We Take Down
- Old houses come down when they are past repair or sit right where a new home should go.
- Mobile homes and singlewides are taken apart and removed from the lot.
- Sheds, barns, garages and other outbuildings go when they are rotting or in the way.
- Old fences come out posts and all, as they did for one backyard customer before we leveled the yard.
Something else in the way? Call (828) 289-8180 and describe it, and Bryson will tell you whether it is work we take on.
What Do You Need to Do Before Demolition?
Some steps before a teardown take days or weeks. Start them as soon as you know the building is coming down.
- Ask the power, gas and water providers to disconnect service and pull their meters.
- Plan for the state notice: North Carolina's Health Hazards Control Unit requires notification ten working days before a building is demolished, whether or not it contains asbestos.
- Take out everything worth saving, from furniture and appliances to whatever is stored in the attic or crawl space.
- Point out the well, the septic system and any buried lines you know of, so machines stay clear of them.
- Leave the permit question to us, since we check what the county or town needs for your address before we start.
Pulling footings or fence posts counts as digging. Anyone digging must contact NC 811 three working days in advance, and the public underground lines are then marked for free.
How a House Demolition Goes
- Bryson looks at the building, the access and what might be underground, then talks the plan through with you.
- The utilities, the state notice and any local permit are sorted out before a machine comes in.
- Our excavator pulls the structure down in sections and loads the debris as it goes.
- The debris is trucked away, and the old footings go with it.
- We fill the holes, grade the lot so water drains off, and seed it or leave it ready for a builder.
Mobile Home Demolition and Removal
An old mobile home that nobody will live in again often sits on the flattest spot of the lot. That is usually right where a new home would go. We take it apart, remove the frame along with the skirting and steps, and clean up whatever was left underneath.
Planning a new home on the same spot? The cleared ground can go straight into house site prep, so one crew takes it from teardown to a ready pad. If the home is still sound enough to move, ask a mobile home mover first.
Sheds, Barns and Outbuildings
A barn with a sagging roof or a rotted shed is unsafe to walk into. It only gets worse with every winter. These smaller jobs often fit around bigger work on the same property, such as land clearing.
Cody G. wrote that we came in at the last minute to finish projects that really needed to be done. If we are already on your land for other work, mention the old shed too.
Site Cleanup and Regrading After Demolition
The ground under an old building is usually uneven, with footings, a crawl space hole and soft fill to deal with. We dig out what should not stay and bring the low spots up. Then the lot is graded so rain moves away from wherever the next building will sit.
From there the lot moves on to grading and excavation for a new build. If nothing is going up yet, bare dirt gets seed, often hydroseeding on a large or sloped area.
“May have been a small job for them but it was huge to us. They dug up and removed a fence, filled in and leveled our yard, knocked down and removed storm damaged trees and cleared a spot for a future shed.”

Questions We Hear a Lot
-
Often there is more than one piece of paperwork. The state notice must be filed ten working days ahead on form DHHS 3768, even when there is no asbestos, and the county or town may want its own permit. We check both for your address before the job goes on the schedule.
-
We load it and haul it off the property, so you are not left with a pile in the yard. Anything you want saved, such as old barn wood or a stack of bricks, should be marked before the machine starts.
-
A shed may take little time, while a house takes longer because of its size, the cleanup and the grading after. Paperwork can decide the earliest start date as well, since the state asbestos notice comes first. After a look at the site, Bryson can tell you roughly how long yours should take.
-
Yes, we take it down, haul it away and clean up the spot where it sat. Have the utilities disconnected and everything you want kept moved out before the crew arrives.
-
That is the point of the regrade: holes filled, low spots raised and the ground sloped so water drains away. If a new house is going on the spot, we can carry on with the pad and the driveway. If not, we seed it so the bare ground does not wash.
