Do You Need a Permit in Rutherfordton?

The General Assembly made Rutherfordton the county seat in 1787, and the county courthouse is here, but for permits the town limits matter more. Addresses inside them deal with the Town of Rutherfordton, whose forms include a Zoning Permit and a Floodplain Development Permit. The town inspects every permit it issues for North Carolina Building and Fire Code compliance. Just outside, a different office can be in charge, so we check which one covers your parcel before any dirt moves.

Clear or grade over one acre and the state comes in as well. DEQ has to approve an erosion and sedimentation control plan, filed 30 or more days ahead, before any land is disturbed.

State air rules allow a land clearing fire without an air quality permit only when, among other conditions, no occupied building off the property stands within 500 feet. On a town lot, we plan for the brush before clearing starts. The NC Forest Service issues burning permits online or through local agents, and its Rutherford County office is at 519 Airport Road in Rutherfordton.

Water, Roads and Buried Lines in Town

US 64 runs east out of Rutherfordton, and like any state highway it falls to NCDOT. Developing a lot or changing its access onto one takes a driveway permit from the District Engineer's office, and applying is free.

Helene and the Storms After It

Hurricane Helene's floods hit Rutherford County on September 26 to 27, 2024, hardest in the mountains up toward Lake Lure. Down here in Rutherfordton, east of the mountains, the National Weather Service still reported flooding, outages, fallen trees and lines, and wind damage. Our crews worked it from start to end. Two years later our post said, “We are so thankful that we were able to assist our county & help touch the lives that were in need.”
