Land Clearing in Rutherfordton, NC
H&L does land clearing in Rutherford County, NC, from a single overgrown lot to acres of pines, brush and briars. The photos below are from pine lots we cleared in June and July 2026. Because our own crew grades the ground afterward, what we open up is ready for a house, a drive or seed.
When Does Overgrown Property Need Clearing?
Open ground that sits unused fills back in with saplings and briars. A wooded lot, on the other hand, has to be opened up before anyone can build on it. These signs mean it is time to call.
- You can no longer walk the land to see where a house, a shed or a garden would go.
- Growth stands taller than you are and hides stumps, holes and old junk.
- Brush has crept in on both sides of the driveway until branches scrape the car.
- Pines tilt over the house or the drive, so tree service has to take them down before the clearing starts.
- An old fence line, a farm lane or a property corner has disappeared under growth.
Our Recent Land Clearing Jobs

Here our dozer is pushing brush across one of those summer pine lots. On a lot like this, brush and young pines come out together, so you can finally see how the ground lies.
On September 1, 2026 we posted “Land clearing-retaining wall, Grading, Hydro seeding to follow” from a site beside the road. There a block wall now holds the bank under a building with a metal roof. Clearing came first, because no one can lay a wall or shape a slope under brush and trees.
How We Clear a Lot, Step by Step
- Bryson meets you on the property to mark the boundaries and flag every tree you want to save.
- We check the size of the disturbed area early, because for anything over one acre, North Carolina's DEQ needs an erosion and sedimentation control plan, filed 30 days or more before work and approved first.
- The dozer pushes out brush, saplings and roots, and the bigger trees that are not on your keep list come down.
- Debris is taken off the work area, and our dump truck services handle anything that has to leave the property.
- We leave the ground shaped for what comes next, whether that is grading and excavation or seed on bare soil.
Clearing Land for a House or a Homesite

Clearing land for a house means thinking about the driveway, the pad and the drainage before a single tree falls. The lane in this photo was opened through tall pines. That is often how a home lot starts: a way in first, then room to build.
A cleared lot also lets you stand on the spot and judge the view, the sun and the slope before anything is built. For Diane V., we opened up part of her acreage so a singlewide had room, then did the grading and the gravel. On a construction company's 30 acres the work was roads, clearing and grading, and walking the land with Bryson helped decide where the homesites should sit.
The pad, the drive and the drainage that follow are covered on our house sites page.
What Comes After the Brush Is Gone?
Bare clay on a slope washes as soon as a heavy rain hits it, so we plan the finish before the dozer ever starts. Most cleared ground gets graded first, and seed goes down once the dirt work is finished. On large or steep areas, hydroseeding gets seed onto ground that is hard to walk. If you will not build for a while, seed it anyway, because a bare lot grows back to brush fast.
Cassandra G. had a second, adjacent property done this way: debris and trees out, then drainage, grading and hydroseeding in one project.
“They also cleared out trees and brush on the property, and the difference is night and day. The team was punctual, hardworking, and clearly knew what they were doing.”

What Customers Say
- “H&L did an outstanding job at our property.”
H&L did an outstanding job at our property. Our adjacent property needed some serious work done and Bryson and his crew went above and beyond! They removed debris, took down trees leaning towards the home, installed a water drainage system, graded, and hydroseeded so we can have some grass instead of 8 foot weeds. We had such a good experience we already are on the schedule to work with them again at our main property. Highly recommend H&L for quality and professional work!
Cassandra G. ★★★★★ Google review - “The team did a great job clearing parts of my acreage for a new singlewide space.”
Bryson from H & L is akways professional and friendly. The team did a great job clearing parts of my acreage for a new singlewide space. They did clearing, grading and gravel. I plan on hiring them again for my next project and would warmly recommend tjem to friends and family
Diane V. ★★★★★ Google review - “May have been a small job for them but it was huge to us.”
We used H&L for several issues in our backyard. May have been a small job for them but it was huge to us. They dug up and removed a fence, filled in and leveled our yard, knocked down and removed storm damaged trees and cleared a spot for a future shed. They topped it off with hydro seeding. I found them easy to work with and very knowledgeable. This type of work makes me nervous and I felt very comfortable with what they did and with their advice. I would use them again.

Questions We Hear a Lot
-
It depends on the acreage, how thick the trees and brush are, the slope and the access, and how much debris has to leave the site. Work that follows, such as grading or seeding, changes the total too. For a real answer, call (828) 289-8180 so Bryson can see the lot in person.
-
Yes, show Bryson the trees worth saving when you walk the lot together, and we work around them. Taking out only the right trees can open up a view. One customer's mountain view opened up once we graded the homesite.
-
A small lot with light brush is a much shorter job than several acres of thick pines. Weather matters as well, because wet clay keeps heavy machines from working. After a visit, Bryson can give you an honest estimate of the days needed.
-
Find your corner pins or survey stakes if you can, and flag any wells, septic lines or buried pipes we must avoid. Make sure a truck and a dozer can get onto the land from the road, including any gate or shared drive.
-
That is agreed with you up front, since the answer turns on the amount of brush and what the site allows. If you want logs kept for firewood, tell us and we set them aside.
