Driveways & Private Roads in Rutherfordton, NC
We build gravel driveways and private roads around Rutherfordton, and we repair the ones that have gone to ruts, holes and washouts. Bryson and the crew do the grading, gravel and drainage as one job, so the road sheds water instead of carrying it.
Private Road Construction Through the Woods

On July 31, 2026, we posted “Grading crew finishing up a new road” with a photo taken from the dozer cab. The blade is down, fresh track marks run through the red clay, and woods stand on both sides of the cut.
Some roads are only needed for a while. In September 2026 we built a block retaining wall beside a log cabin that our machines could not reach, so we cut a temporary road in to get there. Once the wall was done, that road came out and the ground went back to the way it was.
Builders call us too. One customer's construction company had us do several roads, plus land clearing and grading on its property.
Gravel Driveway Installation, Step by Step

The second photo shows a new drive cut through a lawn as a house site begins, dozer at the far end. A new gravel drive goes in this order.
- We mark the line of the drive with you: where it leaves the road, where it climbs and where it ends.
- Trees, brush and roots come out of the path, and soft topsoil is stripped so the stone sits on firm ground.
- We cut the high spots, fill the low ones and shape a crown so rain runs off to the sides.
- Ditches go along the low side, with a culvert wherever water has to cross under the drive.
- Gravel is spread over the graded base and packed down, so the surface stays firm when it rains.
Driveway Repair for Ruts, Holes and Washouts
Most driveway trouble starts with water. These signs mean a drive needs more than another load of gravel.
- Ruts form in the tire tracks and hold water after every rain.
- Holes come back soon after you fill them.
- Rain runs straight down the middle and cuts a channel.
- The edges wash out or grow in with brush, so the drive gets narrower each year.
- A culvert is clogged or crushed, and water crosses over the top of the drive.
A lasting repair means grading the drive back to a crown, opening the ditches and then adding stone. One customer's drive had deep ruts, holes, drainage issues and brush on both sides. Their review says it now looks smooth and solid. Another says Bryson came out, looked at the work and came up with a plan for their driveway. If water pours onto the drive from the yard above, the fix may start with grading up there.
Private Road Repair and POA Road Maintenance
A private road often serves several homes, so one washout or fallen tree can cut off everyone on it. The National Weather Service report on Helene in Rutherford County lists “Widespread road closures, bridges completely wiped out, and roads completely washed away.”
After Hurricane Helene, a customer in the Canecreek mountain POA called us because landslides had closed the roads into the community. Bryson and the crew opened them back up, and that customer then gave us the road contract for maintenance.
Winter storms bring smaller calls. After an ice storm, branches blocked one customer's driveway, a short private road in Rutherfordton. Bryson came out with the crew and cleared it. For a tree across a road at night, our storm damage tree removal crew is on call 24/7.
Do You Need an NCDOT Driveway Permit?
If your drive will meet a state road, talk to NCDOT before any work starts. NCDOT's driveway permit FAQ covers anyone who plans to develop property, change its use or alter the existing access. Each of them needs a driveway permit to obtain or change access to the State Highway System. The permit comes from the local NCDOT District Engineer's office, and NCDOT charges no fee for applying.
A long new road can also be big enough for state erosion rules. When a job disturbs more than one acre, NC DEQ requires an erosion and sedimentation control plan. It must be submitted at least 30 days before land disturbance begins and approved before work starts. On a smaller job we still find out what approvals the road needs before the dozer starts.
“It’s not always easy to find a company that shows up, communicates well, and delivers quality work, but they did all three. I would absolutely recommend them to anyone needing grading, driveway repair, or land clearing.”

Diane V. ★★★★★ Google review - “The work that they did was excellent.”
Bryson arrived today with his crew to clear ice off of our driveway, a short private road in Rutherfordton. The work that they did was excellent. Everyone was very polite, and his price was fair. This was the result of the recent ice storm, which it had caused branches to obstruct the road, and these were taken care of. I would not hesitate to use them again in the future.

Questions We Hear a Lot
-
The length and slope matter, and so do the clearing, the amount of gravel and any culverts. Call (828) 289-8180 and we will come out and look at it with you.
-
Often it can, if the base under the ruts is still firm. Then we regrade it, open up the ditches and add gravel. Where the base has turned to mud, that stretch has to be dug out and built back.
-
We plan the work so you can come and go wherever possible. Some steps, such as setting a culvert, close the drive for a while. We tell you ahead of time so you can park out by the road.
-
Yes. One POA road contract started with Helene repairs, and we have graded that road again after storms since. Tell us how long your road is and where it gives trouble.
-
Show us your property corners and where you want the drive to start and finish. Point out the septic tank and field, water lines and buried cables too, so no loaded truck rolls over them.
