Hydroseeding in Rutherfordton, NC

Hydroseeding, or hydro seeding as our own posts spell it, sprays seed, mulch and water onto bare ground in one pass. It covers a graded lot or a steep bank as soon as the heavy work is done. H&L runs its own hydroseeder and uses it to finish the grading, clearing and wall jobs we do around Rutherfordton. In September 2026 we posted it at work, turning a fresh bank green.

Hydroseeding vs Sod: Which Fits Your Ground?

Sod is grass that has already been grown, cut into rolls and laid by hand, so it looks finished on day one. It suits a small, flat front yard where you want a lawn right away. On a long bank or a few acres of graded clay, the rolls are heavy to haul and hard to keep in place on a slope.

Hydroseed goes on as a wet layer that sticks to the surface, which is why it works on steep or uneven ground where sod would slide. The trade is time: you start with green mulch, and the grass comes up through it as the seed sprouts. For most of the land we grade, that is the better fit.

Seeding Slopes and Bare Red Clay After Grading

Fresh grading leaves red clay with nothing on it. The first hard rain cuts small gullies down the slope and carries mud into ditches, drives and the neighbor's yard. The longer it stays bare, the deeper those gullies get and the more fill has to be brought back. Seeding quickly gives roots a chance to hold the surface.

On bigger jobs the state cares about this too. North Carolina's Department of Environmental Quality says an erosion and sedimentation control plan must be filed when land disturbance covers more than one acre. The plan is due 30 or more days before work begins. We check what your site needs before the first cut.

Our Hydroseeder on a Mountain Job

In this photo one of our crew works the hose from the hydroseeder and sprays the mix up a steep bank above a red-clay road. The hose feeds off a reel on the tank. The green color is dye in the mulch, so he can see where the mix has landed and fill thin spots before moving on.

The tank travels behind our truck, which lets us reach banks and lots far from a paved road. For a job by the road in early September 2026, our post listed land clearing, the retaining wall and grading, and said hydro seeding would follow. That is the usual order: dirt work first, seed last.

How We Hydroseed a Graded Site

  1. We finish the grading first, shaping the ground so rain runs off where it should.
  2. Loose rocks and roots come off the surface, and track marks across the slope give the mix something to grip.
  3. The tank is filled with water, seed and mulch, and the machine keeps it stirred into an even slurry.
  4. We spray in overlapping passes until the whole area shows an even green.
  5. Before we leave, we go over watering with you and which areas to keep off.

What to Do After Hydroseeding

New hydroseed needs water more than anything else. Keep the surface damp with light, frequent watering rather than one long soak, because heavy water on a slope can wash the mulch downhill before the seed takes. If rain does that job for you, let it.

Stay off the seeded area with feet, mowers and vehicles until the grass is up and rooted, and keep dogs off it if you can. A thin patch after a storm happens on steep ground, so call (828) 289-8180 and we will look at spraying it again.

Where Seeding Fits in a Bigger Job

Most of our seeding finishes something else. One customer had us remove debris, take down trees leaning toward the home, install drainage, grade, and then hydroseed, so the property could grow grass instead of 8-foot weeds. Another customer described their property as a mud hole before we hydroseeded it. The sunset photo shows a freshly sprayed area beside a pavilion, still green with mulch.

If your land still needs land clearing, a house site cut in, or grading and drainage work, we can plan the seeding as the last step of the same job.

“We used H&L for several issues in our backyard. They topped it off with hydro seeding. I found them easy to work with and very knowledgeable.”

What Customers Say

  • “H&L did an outstanding job at our property.”

H&L did an outstanding job at our property. Our adjacent property needed some serious work done and Bryson and his crew went above and beyond! They removed debris, took down trees leaning towards the home, installed a water drainage system, graded, and hydroseeded so we can have some grass instead of 8 foot weeds. We had such a good experience we already are on the schedule to work with them again at our main property. Highly recommend H&L for quality and professional work!

Questions We Hear a Lot

  • That depends on the season, the temperature and how steadily the seed gets water. You see the green mulch right away, and new blades push through once the seed germinates. Keep watering until the new grass is growing on its own.

  • Yes, and steep banks are where it earns its keep, because the wet mix sticks where loose seed would roll off. Our hydroseeder photo shows that kind of slope. Rain right after spraying is the main risk on a slope, which is why we watch the forecast before we come.

  • It depends on how much ground there is, how steep it is, how far the hose has to reach and how much prep the surface needs first. Seeding at the end of our own grading job saves a separate trip. Call (828) 289-8180 with the rough size of the area.

  • Move vehicles, toys and anything else off the area, and mark sprinkler heads you know about. Keep pets inside while we work. If the yard still has ruts or bumps, tell us, because the grade has to be right before any seed goes down.

  • The bright color comes from dye in the mulch, and it fades as the mulch breaks down. By then the grass growing through it should be giving you the real green. If bare spots show once it fades, let us know.
